Born again Identity – Already Blessed!

If you are a Christian living in spiritual poverty right now, it’s because you don’t realise what is already yours in Christ. You have never  discovered the contents of the heavenly treasure house – Michael Youssef

I know it’s not the most positive quote that I could have chosen, and I realise that these words are not true for everyone. But I reckon there are many Christians out there that have no idea what is already theirs in Christ. A mixture of their church community isn’t teaching it, they have no interest in this kind of “airy fairy stuff” or it has simply never occurred to them. Either way, not knowing and living in these spiritual truths will cause you to move nowhere fast. To avoid spiritual amnesia its important that we are reminded.

In a previous post I wrote about how an addiction I had got in the way of me really seeing the power of my new identity in Christ. Now free from that addiction and recently starting a study of the book of Ephesians, its like I am understanding it all for the first time. In a way I think that is the way it should be for all of us who are new creations in Christ. Seeing it for the first time daily.

Ephesians 1;3 Praise be to the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

No doubt you have read and heard this scripture before, but that’s ok here it is again. WE HAVE ALREADY BEEN BLESSED IN THE HEAVENLY REALMS WITH EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING IN CHRIST. This is good news!!! In the next few verses in Ephesians 1 it tells us what those spiritual blessings are. I wont list them all here because I think you would really benefit from reading the first chapter few times and making a list for yourself so it really sinks in.

  • God chose us from the beginning
  • We are adopted by him through Christ
  • We have redemption through Christ’s blood
  • God has made known to us the mystery of his will (to be his children, to be like Christ)

All of our stories are different so these truths will means different things for each of us. It is our responsibility as new creations in Christ to learn about our new positions, and to walk in the freedom that has been given to us. If you are passionate about this stuff and know Christians who really have no idea about the new life they have in Christ, then I really encourage you to come along side them and help them grow in their understanding.

Thanks for reading. Which spiritual blessing mentioned in chapter 1 of Ephesians have you found most significant for you and why?

  1. For me, being adopted as His child has been the greatest blessing–having a Father who will never fail, forsake, or die. I love my own father very much, but he has his weak points, as we all do. I am thankful to be loved by someone so faithful and so awesome as our God.

    1. That’s the one for me as well. Didn’t know my real earthly father as I was adopted when I was young, and so reflecting on this stuff during my time as a Christian has always been helpful. Adopted twice;-)

  2. The appreciation of our status as God’s children is, of course, more than a mathematical theorem to be memorized. Our own childhood experiences have great bearing. If we were loved and cherished, it is far easier for us to imagine a loving God than if were neglected or harmed outright. In the latter case, the very idea of “blessings” is at odds with what we’ve known. We’ve been rejected, not blessed. Having been taught we deserve abuse, we are likely to recreate the abusive situations familiar to us. When the reality of our acceptance by God does finally flood our minds and hearts, the idea is all the sweeter. But it can take a long while getting there.

  3. Interesting scriptures, and truthfully, I need to go back to Ephesians, I just realized God was using those chapters to explain how worthy I am as his daughter. He is truly our Heavenly Father. I need to go back to the study and dig into the word.
