Born again identity – You are the Church

Earlier this year I started studying the book of Ephesians as I had always been interested in what the Bible had to say about our identity as Christians.  Unfortunately an addiction to smoking had always been getting in the way of me fully grasping what it meant to be a new creation in Christ. (Cigarette free for over 6 months now!)

If you have been following the born again identity series, I really hope that you have benefited from what I have been sharing. If you haven’t read any of the other posts you can find them here.  Born again identity  Born again Identity – Already Blessed!  Born again identity – Dead and alive  Born again identity – Relocated and  Born again identity – Bold and confident. This will be the 2nd last post for this series.

One of the biggest things you will learn about finding your identity in Christ, is that you are not alone. You are now part of a massive international family called the church. We who are members of the body of Christ are his representatives in the world. I have been told a number of times in my life that I am part of a mass delusion, I have also heard Christians say they don’t need the church and unfortunately I have heard all to many times Christians constantly bad mouthing the church in front of people who are not Christians. I think this is sad and I would assert that if more followers of Christ realised they are the church, and the church matters to God, then the body of Christ would look different today.

Ephesians 3:6 This mystery is that through the gospel the gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus

Ephesians 4:25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body.

We are joined to each other through the blood of Christ. While I realise that this isn’t good news for everyone and some would rather do their faith journey alone, there are plenty of benefits of being a member of the biggest family on planet earth.

  • For those who have been rejected by their blood family or they have never known them, they have the opportunity to be known and valued as well as welcoming others.
  • Lots of opportunities to serve others both locally and globally and learn more about God and yourself while doing that.
  • Be part of a intentional faith based community where people are on the same mission. To be disciples of Christ and to make him known.

During my time as a Christian I have had the opportunity to see many different aspects of the church at work, the diversity is amazing, the creativity and passion for people and God have inspired me. I’m thankful that all this is part of my identity and I believe its a privilege to be part of something so big with Jesus Christ at the head.

If you have any thoughts on the Christian identity or want to add to the list I have started about the benefits,  please leave a comment. would love to hear from you.

  1. Very nice post, Dave, and filled with solid truth. Christians were never called to go it alone, but, as you say, to take their part in their family of Christ with the gift God has given to each of us, and He has endowed all of us to serve Him. I love your next-to-last paragraph; this would sum up my 31-plus-year walk with the Lord as well. Blessings, David Ettinger.

  2. I wrote a comment before but it’s disappeared. Not sure why. But I was just saying how I love the fact you reminded us that we are the church and not the building. When Jesus said “I will build my church”, He meant He will raise you and I. The church is the most beautiful thing on earth. We need to start lifting and building each other up instead of tearing down. When someone makes us angry at work, we don’t quit our job. Why don’t we apply the same principle in church.

I wrote about this sometime ago. You might want to check them out.

  3. Great stuff here. It does make me sad to hear Christians bad-mouthing the church… it’s more than a little bit like mutiny (or maybe epilepsy since we are all members of His body). I love how you ended on what you appreciate in the church, though! There is a great wonder in being a part of a family that transcends race, culture, and continents. May we all seek to be mindful of being a helpful and edifying part of the Body rather than a malfunctioning piece. 😉

    1. Thanks Heather. I totally agree with your epilepsy comment, it effects us all. I appreciate you dropping by and amen to all us being more helpful rather than unhelpful when it comes to this stuff.

  4. People misunderstand the building for the body. Not all flocks in buildings will work with a believer, but the true Bride of Christ, the church will. Not all churches work out, and sometimes there are false prophets and shepherds in churches, but that doesn’t mean it is this way in every church. I’ve had bad churches experiences but God has used it for His good and I lime sharing the whole story because everyone can then see the connection of His work 🙂

    1. G’day Lynn, I am certain not many believers think of the church as being part of their identity, I really think that needs to change. Thanks for reading and commenting, I am glad you got something out of it.

    1. Thanks Scott, it has been a massive thing in my life, especially after smoking for so many years. I am thinking of writing a post about it. If I can help you in anyway dude, don’t hesitate to get in touch

  5. Congrats on your journey of staying smoke free. That’s wonderful news — I wish more people did it. It would make my fellow asthmatics and I very happy to breathe fresh air without smoke and smog. 😇 The global church body of Christ is so important. At one time in my life, I used to talk about the church not understanding the scriptures of us being a global church. I was confusing religious teachings, doctrines and denominations with the true church and body of Christ. Church rules and regulations are not scripture. They are man made rules and not God’s rules. Now I know better and I help share the good news with others. 😇
