Asleep in the light?

While reading the Gospels it becomes very clear that Jesus Knew where he was from, where he was going and most of all what he was meant to be doing. One of the things I like about him was that he was so confident about who he was, this meant he was able to give himself some pretty big titles. Names like Resurrection True vine   and The way tell us that he is more than just a good teacher.

In the book of John, Jesus reveals another name for himself, which should give everyone who reads it hope. John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Because the world is full of darkness and there is more than enough counterfeit light to go around, our only hope is in the one who defeated the darkness on the cross and gives real life.

When I came across this scripture this morning the first thing that came to my mind were some lyrics from a Keith Green song. Can’t you see it’s such a sin. The world is sleeping in the dark that the church cant fight, Cause its asleep in the light. How can you be so dead , when you’ve been so well fed. Jesus rose from the grave and you, you can’t even get out of bed. Jesus rose from the dead, come on, get out of your bed.

I believe there is a large percentage of the church who have been made alive in Christ, but are living as if they are dead. I am going to put it out there and suggest that this is because they simply don’t know or understand the power of the Word or the promises of God.  While many in the church are asleep in the light, how can we daily experience the benefits of being children of God, and how can we expect the world to take us seriously if we look and sound the same as everyone else. Like the song says “how can you be so dead, when you’ve been so well fed.” We have been giving so much!

Some of us need a gentle nudge while others need to be pushed out of our comfy snooze time. The light of the world is with us and by following him we will not only never walk in darkness, but we will have the light of life to share with those around us. And God knows the that the world needs a redeemer and for the Church to be his hands and feet.

  1. I have been thinking of this as well. I think the problem is that many Christians don’t know who they are. We all know whose we are but not all of us know who we are. In order to know who we are, we need to ask the One who made us. Unfortunately many christians are asking and looking up to the world for this answer. Christianity is about revelation. Until we fully understand that we were sent here for a purpose and as such we are to give account of this life to the One who sent us here, we will continue to live in this dilemma of lukewarmness and uncertainty.

    1. So true Efua. “We all know whose we are but not all of us know who we are” – what you have said here is massive and needs to be addressed in church communities. Have you heard of a writer named Dr Neil T. Anderson? I am reading one of his books at the moment and he has a lot to say about what you have said and our position in Christ. Thanks for your comment

      1. Yeah he is very passionate about people understanding about their position in Christ and believes many problems come from Christians simply having no idea. That’s the gist and I thinks you would enjoy his stuff.

  2. The world has found its way into many churches so being asleep in the dark is no long just for those outside of the church – when we water down the truth to attract the world we don’t invite those in the darkness into the light but rather we invite the darkness into the light until there is no light left – reality makes me sound like a grumpy old man that wants his church back the way it was, change in the way we do things isn’t the issue – it is change in the message that makes me a grumpy not so old man
