A prayer for you this week – Keep in step

I am writing to encourage you who have responded to the call of Christ. Whether you’re a follower or believer it doesn’t matter, my prayer applies to you both.

Its good to be reminded about what God did and continues to do for us who are part of the body of Christ. Romans 5:8 says that While were still sinners, Christ died for us.

God made us alive with Christ!

You may not feel very alive right at this moment or you may even feel far from Christ. Come back, make that choice to believe the truth which has been presented to you in his word. Not only are you alive with Christ, you have been called free. I pray that with this freedom you will make good choices to serve others in love instead of using your freedom to entertain the flesh. ( Galatians 5:13).

One of the awesome things about being the church is that we have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit. Our comforter & advocate, who helps us navigate the Christian Journey. In the book of John chapter 14: 26 Jesus says that the Holy Spirit will teach and remind us . Not just any teacher and not just some half hearted help available to us. But we have a role to play as well.

We have new life, have been given freedom and have a teacher sent by God who is with us 24/7

Let us be reminded that the flesh, that part of us that is not renewed, wants nothing to do with what the Spirit wants and the Holy Spirit doesn’t want what the flesh wants. Lets just be honest with ourselves, they are at war with each other. Therefore we must choose my friend. My prayer for you today is that you will choose to walk by the spirit, that is to keep in step with Spirit (Galatians 5:25) that has been given to you. It’s the acts of the flesh which last for a moment and leave you feeling (Galatians 5:19-21) disconnected vs the fruit of Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) which changes the game for good and is under grace and not the law.

My hope is that you will pray this prayer and be strengthened as you head into the new week. That you will remind yourself daily of the Gospel and in all circumstances be thankful for the freedom in Christ that you have. Whatever is in store for you over the next 7 days I pray that you will engage with your faith, Jesus, the bible and your spiritual disciplines differently, with more passion and confidence.

Galatians 6: 9-10 in the MSG says – So lets not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.

Thanks for reading and as always, if you have found anything helpful from this prayer, I encourage you to leave a comment or to share it with people that you think could benefit.

  1. Thank you for this prayer, Dave. In my 30-plus years as a Christian, by far my biggest challenge is what you have mentioned above, walking in the Spirit. We never get to the point where it’s automatic, but must aspire to it on a daily basis. A very insightful post, indeed.

    1. No worries David, as always thanks for dropping by dude. Wouldn’t it be awesome if it was automatic, but then we miss out on learning with each other right? Thanks for your comment.

  2. Thanks Evad! I’m challenging myself to choose good over evil this week. To choose the spirit over the flesh. To allow the light of Christ shine through me and to live a life that makes God smile. Have a blessed week

  3. Wonderful encouragement, Dave! And you have quoted one of my favorite passages… Galatians 6:9-10. When I was much younger, I memorized the first ten verses of Galatians 6. And, that alone would make those verses special. But add to that the extraordinary encouragement of verses 9 and 10, and well, what’s not to love about this passage? Thanks so much for highlighting and directing us to such a profound application of scripture, Dave. This is an outstanding post! 🙂

  4. Thanks so much for the encouragement and the prayer, Evad. I like that in this prayer you said, “Let us be reminded that the flesh, that part of us that is not renewed, wants nothing to do with what the Spirit wants and the Holy Spirit doesn’t want what the flesh wants. Lets just be honest with ourselves, they are at war with each other. Therefore we must choose my friend.”

That verse right here for me is a daily struggle between what the flesh wants and what the Spirit wants. I know that they are at war with each other and sometimes, it’s difficult not to want to give into the desires of our flesh, but I have to continually remind myself that Christ is right beside me and all I have to do is reach out to Him.

  5. Great prayer for sure! Walking by the Spirit and putting to death the works of the sin nature have been on my mind a good deal lately. I also love the reminder in Galatians to do good “especially to those who are of the household of faith (as per the translation I memorized it in). It’s so, so important to follow the Spirit in all our deeds – otherwise we end up depending on our own strength, which is never enough!

I recently ran across an excerpt from George Mueller about discerning God’s will which I am prayerfully putting into practice. I have some very sticky areas to make decisions in, all of which I am trying to sort out my will from my husband’s will from God’s. Wow! Boy do I need to walk by the Spirit in these areas!! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hey hey it feels like it’s been awhile Heather. Good to hear from you and thanks for your comment. “It’s so, so important to follow the Spirit in all our deeds – otherwise we end up depending on our own strength, which is never enough!” – Ament to this Heather.

Its good to know we are not alone in this stuff, I am sure as you keep in step and take one at a time you will do fine with what you are working through. You should leave a prayer request on T.R Noble’s page.

      1. T. R. Noble? I’ll have to look him (her?) up. It has been a while. February was a crazy month for us. We’ve been doing some home repairs – painting ancient cabinets, redoing floors, etc. – plus helping out some friends with various things. And I’m working on a novel, so I’ve had little time for reading other people’s blogs. I haven’t even been posting regularly! Hope to get back in a groove soon, though. Good ‘talking’ to ya!
