The book of Proverbs tells us, that when we are without self-control, we are like a city broken into and left without walls. Thankfully, God has provided instructions for us in the book of Romans that help us to build the walls of self-control.
Romans 6:13-14 says “Do not present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you since you are not under the law but under grace.
It’s important to be aware of when you are likely to offer your mind, eyes and hands to sin. I would encourage you to speak the truth of this scripture from Romans out loud, then make some changes to your environment to practice self-control, which could include fleeing the scene of temptation.
Believing in the truth, that sin no longer has dominion over you, will then give you the freedom to say no, and yes to offering your members to God as instruments of righteousness.
Keep in mind that Jesus was tempted in everyway and did not sin. He understands our weaknesses, so in our desire to be less like a defenceless city, we can draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. – Hebrews 4:16
Doing romans 6:13-14 is not a once off thing, and will need to be practiced for the rest of our lives, and as we become more obedient to the word, God will grow us and our ability to be more self-controlled in different areas of our lives.
When we are diligent with this practice, we will instead be like a fortified city, and self control will then be displayed in our lives.
Thank-you for the reminder that verse, “For sin will have no dominion over you since you are not under the law but under grace.”
