Are you a person who comes before God busy and task focused?
I recently caught myself in the middle of talking to God with my mouth, realising my mind and attention were nowhere near by. I tried to ignore what was going on, but it became so difficult to engage with him that I had to stop.
We can always come with confidence
But that doesn’t mean that we should never give any thought to the state of our heart and mind as we enter into his presence. I want to encourage you, especially if you struggle in this area, to make a habit of reading and setting your mind on scripture that will cause you to come to God differently.
Oh come, let us sing to the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! LET US COME INTO HIS PRESENCE WITH THANKSGIVING, let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God , and a great King above all gods. – Psalm 95:1-3
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deep in storehouses. – Psalm 33:6-7
As we decide to come before God with thanksgiving with more than just our mouths we will:
- Be reminded of who it is we are connecting with.
- See that our busyness can wait a moment.
- Learn to dethrone ourselves when it comes to our prayer life.
Are there specific scriptures that help you focus when it comes to engaging with God?
Learn to dethrone ourselves when it comes to our prayer lives- that is such a good point. Son to ing that takes intention as it our natural meaning to keep ourselves in the centre of it all. And to not just use words but to check where our hearts are at when we approach God in prayer. Great word.
