Is there an area in your life that needs you to practice some self control?
Proverbs 25:28 says that a man without self control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
Take a moment and bring that image to your mind, a city left without walls, where enemies have located or created a weakness in the walls of a city, and have broken in. The inhabitants of that place are now without protection and will continue to be vulnerable unless those walls are rebuilt.
The bible tells us that when we are without self control, we are just like a city that has been left without walls after being broken into.
Have you ever considered the damage that not practicing self control is doing to your life?
From my experience, self control is not really talked about openly or deeply in the body of christ, and because of this we can become passive when it comes to participating in our sanctification, not thinkng about the long term effects this will have on us.
The consequences of saying yes when we should be saying no
Each time we choose not to practice self control, our desire to avoid sin and addictive behaviors can weaken. We then become comfortable with things that will always cause us to stumble on our journey of following Christ.
Over time we become more vulnerable to the attacks of the father of lies and self control becomes something that is too difficult to engage in. We are just like the city broken into and left without walls.
Are you born again, and without self control? It’s time to rebuild those walls.
If you have already been thinking about the cost of not having self control in your life, or this devotion has helped you see that you need to be more active, then I really want to encourage you to take some steps to being like a city with strong walls.
- Start talking to God about your failure to practice self control in whatever area that has needed it.
- Find one or 2 people from your church community that you trust and share with them this post and what you have been talking to God about.
- Do a bible study on the subject of self control and meditate on a scripture that stands out to you. (I would encourage you to do this with someone else.)
- Think about the times when you need to practice self control the most and plan ahead.
- Repeat with the intention of becoming a doer of the word. Be patient.
If this has help you in anyway please let me know so i can pray for you, and be sure to share it with anyone you think may benefit. Stay tuned as well as there will be 2 more posts about the need to build the walls of self control.
Good word. Looking forward to the next two on this topic.

This is very thought provoking. Self control isn’t celebrated, especially in a society that promotes doing more. But sometimes less is more and we need to choose quality over quantity. Doing so takes self control. And self control leads to more obedience to the Lord, we must choose His will over our own. This would make a great group discussion. Thank you!

Amen, it’s def worth a discussion. Paul felt the need to have dialogue with Felix about it in the book or Acts. How much more today Dawn. Important that we desire the fruit of the spirit, so we can keep in step with the spirit.
